Playwriting-Canfield Drive: Experience

August 9, 2014-August 3, 2019

Canfield Drive Co-Writer

On August 9th of 2014, my co-writer Kristen Adele Calhoun and I watched as the media began to create a narrative about the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. We felt strongly that we needed to create an artistic response and set out to write a play about his death and about race in America. We interviewed all sorts of people in NYC and in St. Louis about the protesting and subsequent Black Lives Matter movement that was born from the civil unrest. What came out of our process was a play that shares both the interviews we gathered and our own fictional telling of two national reporters trying to cover the death of Michael Brown. Below are the steps and sequences of the journey to write the script, starting with our grant from the National Performance Network and ending with The Black Rep's production of the play at the National Black Theatre Festival in 2019.
